CERTIFICATION
THE ASE PROGRAM
The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was established in 1972. It's an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to giving consumers a way of recognizing competent
mechanics.
Currently, there are more than 440,000 certified professionals working in every segment of the automotive service industry.
A technician can take one or more of ASE's 36 exams, which are grouped into specialties for
automobile repair (including AC recovery & recycling), medium/heavy truck repair, school bus repair, collision repair & refinish as well as engine machinists, alternate fuels technicians and parts specialists.
Upon passing at least one exam and after providing proof of two years of relevant work experience, a technician will achieve ASE certification. Technicians that pass all of the exams in a specialty area earn ASE Master Technician status. An automobile technician, for example, must pass eight exams to earn this status. To remain certified, technicians must be retested every five years. This assures the consumer that the ASE certified technician is keep current with the latest technology in automotive repair. It also reflects a commitment to quality, on behalf of the repair facility employing the ASE certified technician.
ASE certified technicians usually wear blue and white ASE shoulder insignia and carry credentials listing their exact area or areas of expertise (brakes, engine repair, etc.). Employers often display their technicians' credentials in the customer waiting area.
